Solar providing solutions for rural areas in Europe
By Alexandre Roesch, Policy Director
SolarPower Europe presented on 7 June the latest developments in the field of solar during the workshop organised in the European Parliament by MEP Tibor Szanyi on 'Smart Villages'. We highlighted in particular the local value created by community solar parks and the potential of collective self-consumption business models at district level.
The 'EU Action for Smart Villages' has been initiated by the European Commission in 2016 to explore how digital technologies and innovations can support quality of life, higher standard of living, public services for citizens, better use of resources, less impact on the environment and new opportunities for rural value chains in terms of products and improved processes. It will be implemented via a series of dedicated working groups, workshops and seminars to better understand how the different EU instruments can better interact with a view to provide new growth opportunities to the rural areas.
