Algerian Opportunities for SolarPower Europe Members

By James Watson, CEO

Following our work with the Algerian government last year on developing solar in Algeria, we can report on some recent developments.

In April the Algerian Minister of Energy Mr Boutarfa was in Brussels for a high level meeting with Energy Commissioner Miguel Arias Canete. The Algerians gave a preliminary presentation of the call for tender for 4000 MW of PV projects in Algeria.

It has been indicated that a consultation with the EU solar industry should take place before the call is launched, with a view to taking into consideration the concerns and expectations of potential investors. This meeting will take the form of a mini-forum in Algiers where representatives of the European solar industry are invited to give insight to successful tendering. The Algerians will also give an in-depth presentation of all the documents making up the forthcoming 4000 MW call for tender (decree, terms of reference, power purchase agreement contract) and seek feedback, with a view to revising the documents before the call is launched, towards the end of the year.

This meeting will take place on 13th June and if you are interested in attending with SolarPower Europe please contact us to confirm your interest in joining this delegation to Algiers. This is a good opportunity to shape the tender before it comes out. For more information please contact me on j.watson@solarpowereurope.org
