Solar is one of the most equitably distributed energy resources in the world. All countries in the world have access to sunlight regardless of population, land or economic wealth. Being one of the cheapest sources of electricity, solar can significantly contribute to the socio-economic development of developing countries and in particular Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) 7 “Universal access to affordable, reliable, sustainable and modern energy by 2030” and SDG 13 “Take urgent action to combat climate change and its impacts”.

Many emerging markets are outpacing developed markets in terms of solar scale-up, while other interesting markets still lack capital and infrastructure for large-scale deployment. There are several initiatives and financing tools aimed at accelerating the development of solar in emerging countries. SolarPower Europe works to identify business opportunities for solar companies in new, high potential and thriving markets.

The Emerging Markets Task Force aims to reduce barriers to solar deployment by addressing the key regulatory, administrative and bankability challenges in emerging solar markets.
