Today at Intersolar Europe, SolarPower Europe launched the Solar O&M Best Practices Mark, a self-certification-based label to promote transparency and excellence in the Operation and
Europe is the continent with one of the largest and oldest fleet of solar plants; we need proper care for these assets to meet performance expectations. Operation and Maintenance (O&M) and Asset Management are key to the technical and economic performance of solar systems and plants.
O&M and Asset Management became standalone segments within the solar industry and it is widely acknowledged by all stakeholders that high-quality O&M and Asset Management services mitigate potential risks, improve the Levelised Cost of Electricity (LCOE) and Power Purchase Agreement (PPA) prices, and positively impact the return on investment (ROI).
One of the main challenges facing the solar O&M industry is the discrepancies between the quality of services provided by different O&M contractors. Reasons for this include increasing price pressure, lack of standardisation and minimum requirements, inadequate management processes, poorly qualified staff and insufficient use of digital data analytics. SolarPower Europe’s O&M Task Force has therefore developed and updates annually the O&M Best Practices Guidelines to contribute to the improvement of the quality and standardisation of solar O&M.
With the professionalisation of solar investors and the globalization of solar investment portfolios, service quality expectations are rising rapidly, which puts increasing requirements on asset managers, too. As opposed to O&M service providers, asset managers deal with the commercial and financial management of a solar investment. To address the issue of quality in solar asset management, SolarPower Europe started the development of the Solar Asset Management Best Practices Guidelines, to be launched in December 2019.
