Solar and clean transport offer interesting synergies

Transforming and greening transport is pivotal to decarbonising our economies, and at the centre the Fit for 55 Package. The sector is responsible for a quarter of global CO2 emissions, which makes it the third largest emitting sector and the only sector that has increased its emissions since 1990.

Transport is as clean as the fuel it consumes. The direct and indirect electrification of all different modes of transport must be conducted together with the deployment of renewable energy capacities. Solar PV electricity is also offering increasingly cost-competitive prices, which are already well below residential and industrial electricity tariffs or wholesale market prices. Setting the right conditions for their coordinated deployment is key to ensure the long term supply of clean and affordable fuel. 

 

Solar and clean transport, in particular electric mobility, offer very interesting synergies. For road transport in the light, a typical rooftop 5-kW solar panel can easily produce the daily amount of electricity needed for the average commute of an electric vehicle. 

 

Solar hydrogen will also be critical for decarbonising those transport segments where direct electrification is not cost-competitive or not technically possible, as in the maritime and aviation sectors.
