SOLAR MATERIALS: Gold European Solar Sustainability Award Winner 2024

by Thérèse O Donoghue - 27 January 2025
SolarPower Europe's Solar Sustainability Champion Award recognises top sustainability players in the solar PV sector. SOLAR MATERIALS was awarded the Gold European Solar Sustainability Award 2024, for their efforts to make solar more circular, and recover more raw materials in the recycling process. We spoke with Dr. Jan-Philipp Mai, Co-Founder & CEO at SOLAR MATERIALS, to find out more.
1. Congratulations on winning the European Solar Sustainability Award 2024 - how does it feel to have won?

Winning this award is a big honor and a proud moment for everyone at SOLAR MATERIALS. It’s a recognition of our team's hard work, innovative spirit, and dedication to creating a truly sustainable solar industry. It recognises that recycling is a key element on this journey. We're thrilled to see our vision for a circular economy in the solar sector gaining such meaningful recognition.

2. Can you tell us some more about the project that won the award, and how it promotes sustainable solar?

SOLAR MATERIALS is revolutionising the way solar modules are recycled. Unlike traditional methods that rely on shredding and sorting, we have developed a fully automated process that allows us to recover 98% of the raw materials from end-of-life solar panels. These materials come with an 80% lower carbon footprint compared to primary raw materials, which is a significant step forward to a green future.

By closing the loop, we aim to ensure that solar energy remains as green as it promises to be. This approach not only conserves resources but also supports the transformation of the solar industry into a sustainable circular economy.

3. Why should we celebrate sustainability practices in the solar sector?

Sustainability is the cornerstone of the solar sector’s promise to deliver clean energy. But solar power alone is not enough—it must be sustainable from start to finish. Therefore, the recycling of the panels if they reach their end of life is necessary. Materials need to be reused.

By celebrating and recognising innovative practices, we inspire more companies to take bold steps toward reducing their environmental impact. It’s also a powerful way to show the world that the solar industry is leading by example in the fight against climate change.

4. Why are awards like the European Solar Sustainability Award important for the solar sector?

These awards shine a spotlight on the vital work being done to make solar energy more sustainable. They create a platform for sharing best practices and innovative solutions, which benefits the entire industry. For us at SOLAR MATERIALS, this recognition is a motivator—it reinforces that we’re on the right path and encourages us to push even further. On a broader scale, awards like this help raise awareness about the importance of sustainability in renewable energy, inspiring others to join the movement toward a circular and greener future.
