The future of solar is in your hands

With the EU Elections on the horizon (6-9 June to be exact!) I wanted to take this opportunity to remind you about the importance of having your say.

With the EU Elections on the horizon (6-9 June to be exact!) I wanted to take this opportunity to remind you about the importance of having your say.

This month marked 2 years since the REPowerEU package and EU Solar Strategy published by the European Commission – an example of concrete action taken by the EU in response to the devastating Russian war in Ukraine, and impending energy crisis. Setting a trajectory towards 750 GW of solar PV by 2030, accelerating permitting rules, putting in place an EU Solar Standard to put solar PV on all new rooftops, to the creation of the European Solar PV Industry Alliance; all pioneering initiatives under the landmark EU Solar Strategy.

Solar has delivered for Europe. 2 years on, through an energy crisis, the EU solar PV sector  installed over 100 GW across the continent, equivalent to powering 30 million more homes with clean energy.

The European Green Deal, the European Commission’s growth strategy for the EU economy, people and planet, has brought a record number of EU legislation to support the deployment of solar and renewables.  In 2021, the European Commission proposed a new regulatory framework to take the continent to a 55% reduction of GHG in 2030, and achieve climate neutrality in 2050. The package included a target of 40% renewables in the energy mix by 2030, which has now been raised to 42.5% with a 2.5% top up target, under the Renewable Energy Directive.

However, this momentum is not guaranteed to stay.  It is more important  than ever to use your voice and ensure that the Green Deal stays on the agenda for the next EU mandate.

Make no mistake: we still have significant obstacles to overcome. We must ensure our grids are up to the task, by employing more flexibility and storage. We must also urgently support our European solar manufacturers and keep our vital industry alive in Europe, by rapidly implementing the Net-Zero Industry Act.

There are many ways you can do your part to encourage more people to vote in the European elections. Catch up on the webinar we held earlier this month where representatives from the European Commission and the European Parliament shared insights on what role the EU plays for renewables, and how you can mobilise the clean energy community to vote this June.

We must continue to work together to make solar PV the core of the European energy system. This month, SolarPower Europe has been gathering members for thematic days, starting with the Solar Communications Forum, Manufacturing Strategy Day, and the Rooftop PV Strategy Day, for strategic discussions and knowledge exchange.

The SolarPower Europe team looks forward to continuing these exchanges at Intersolar from 18-20 June where we will be taking part in the conference and exhibition, as well as launching the latest edition of our Global Market Outlook for Solar Power 2024-2028.

Make sure to call by our booth B3.109 to pick up a free copy of the report, talk to our team, and don’t forget to join us for our booth party on Thursday 20 June from 18:00.
