Innovation, the backbone of the renewables sector, was celebrated tonight at the second annual Digital Solar & Storage Startup Awards. The Startup Awards honour small, early-career startups with the most innovative ideas in the field of digitalisation and solar storage. While all four of the 2019 finalists presented trailblazing initiatives, FlexiDAO was selected by the audience as the winner.
The Barcelona-based FlexiDAO presented a software platform for energy retailers that harnesses the power of blockchain technology to provide energy data management tools. Their vision is to provide the IT backbone that enables the transformation of the energy sector into a truly carbon-free, prosumer-centric, decentralised and democratic market.
FlexiDAO, along with three other finalists – AMMP, EINHUNDERT, and LIFEPOWR – were selected from a shortlist of 10 startups, based on criteria that included innovation, market impact, business strategy, and team dynamic. The four finalists presented their projects at the Digital Solar & Storage event, and following a Q&A with the jury, the audience had the opportunity to vote for the winner.
At the evening awards ceremony, FlexiDAO were presented with a prize package that included €5,000 (sponsored by Enerparc), free coaching from BeeFounders, and a free start-up exhibition spot at The Smarter E Europe 2020 in Munich (sponsored by The Smarter E). All four finalists received one year of free membership at SolarPower Europe.
Joan Collell, Co-founder and COO of FlexiDAO, responding to his team’s win said: “We are excited and honoured to win the Startup Awards, and feel very supported in this amazing network and know that it will facilitate our growth as a startup. We believe that the future of solar lies in distributed generation, and that’s where FlexiDao comes in. We’re offering the first software that tracks and certifies renewable energy in real-time with blockchain technology – matching generation and consumption for corporate consumers that want to display green energy achievements to their stakeholders. Blockchain connects distributed systems digitally, and creates local marketplaces for people to connect to neighbours and facilities. We need to keep pushing the sector forward because climate change is real and just around the corner.”
Michael Schmela, Executive Advisor and Head of Market Intelligence of SolarPower Europe, commented: “In order to facilitate the clean energy transition, and address the challenges that decarbonisation presents, bright ideas and solutions are required. As digitalisation and storage are becoming increasingly central to solar as a future pillar of the energy transition, it is a pleasure to recognise new players that push the sector forward. FlexiDAO is exemplary of this innovative spirit, and their blockchain technology offers a clever solution to advance the transition”.
The Startup Awards are part of the annual Digital Solar & Storage event, which occurred in Brussels from 5–6 November, and gathered high-level executives, digital innovators, storage solution suppliers, and representatives from the European Parliament and Commission to discuss the latest business models and market trends shaping the New Energy World.
