Greenpeace Ukraine and SolarPower Europe organise event to accelerate solar investments in Ukraine

9 July 2025

On 9 July, SolarPower Europe co-organised a side event at the 2025 Ukraine Recovery Conference with Greenpeace Ukraine and Greenpeace Italy on ‘Fostering solar investments in Ukraine.’

Giuseppe Onufrio, Executive Director of Greenpeace Italy moderated the conversation, which explored how we can improve financing and investment conditions for solar energy in Ukraine.

Our Chief Operating Officer Máté Heisz opened the event alongside Natalia Gozak, Office Director at Greenpeace Ukraine. She highlighted Greenpeace's ongoing work in the country, emphasising the critical role that renewable energy, especially solar, will play in Ukraine’s post-war recovery.

“It is essential now more than ever to stand by the Ukrainian people, harnessing the immense potential of renewable energy, particularly solar…. By investing in solar projects, we are investing in Ukraine’s prosperity. Solar energy brings more than just power - it brings hope, it brings opportunity, and it brings the promise of a brighter and peaceful future.”

Additionally, Máté emphasised that a common myth persists – that investment in Ukraine's solar sector must wait until the war ends. He argued that it is possible, and essential, to create an attractive climate for both local and international solar investors. This includes leveraging EU funding — particularly the EU’s Ukraine Facility, a dedicated instrument providing Ukraine with up to €50 billion in stable and predictable financial support between 2024 and 2027.

During the panel discussion, Gianluca Gramegna, Head of Environmental Social & Governance at ERG Spa, stressed the importance of energy storage systems for harnessing a resilient and flexible energy system in Ukraine.

Adil Hanif, Head of Sustainable Markets at the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD), stated the importance of balanced risk-sharing to attract private investment into Ukraine.

In her contributions, Inna Sovsun, Member of the Ukrainian Parliament, called for Ukraine’s reconstruction to be sustainable and forward-looking, urging for stronger efforts to de-risk the Ukrainian market for renewables.

We look forward to continuing our partnership with Greenpeace Ukraine to safeguard the country’s long-term energy resilience.
