On 16 July, the first-ever Battery Business & Development Forum took place in Frankfurt am Main.
The Forum was co-organised by Conexio-PSE, pv magazine and SolarPower Europe, and brought together developers, investors, policymakers, and technology specialists to address key challenges and explore emerging opportunities in the battery energy storage sector. Among the 450 delegates in attendance, four speakers from SolarPower Europe contributed to high-level discussions shaping the role of storage in Europe’s energy transition.
Dries Acke, Deputy CEO of SolarPower Europe, opened the conference alongside Michael Fuhs and Marija Maisch of pv magazine, and Isabelle Haag, Head of Energy Industry Events at Conexio-PSE, setting the tone for a forum focused on unlocking the full potential of grid-scale storage in Europe.

In the next session, Antonio Arruebo, Market Analyst at SolarPower Europe, shared insights on the expansion of Battery Energy Storage Systems (BESS) in Europe, looking at the topics of grid-scale battery deployment and revenue models for battery storage systems. This was followed by a presentation by Juhi Dion Sud, Head of the newly formed Battery Storage Europe Platform, who highlighted that battery storage is no longer a choice but a necessity in Europe’s energy transition. She underlined the EU’s urgent need to scale up from 75 GWh to at least 780 GWh of battery storage by 2030 i.e., 10X which will be the focus of the platform, and outlined how the platform aims to improve the business case, shape policy, strengthen supply chains, and support industry collaboration to meet the ‘10XBatteryStorage’ goal.
“In 2025, we expect that the EU will have installed around 75 GWh of battery energy storage systems. But this barely scratches the surface. To stay on track for the 2030 renewables targets, the EU needs to ramp up battery storage to at least 780 GWh. That’s why we’re calling for a tenfold scale-up of battery deployment by 2030.”

Finally in a parallel session, Michael Schmela, Executive Advisor and Director of Market Intelligence at SolarPower Europe, moderated the Country Tables Take-Aways session, helping distil key insights from national-level discussions and offering reflections on how lessons learnted can be applied across markets.

A huge thank you to our co-organisers, expert speakers, and all participants for the valuable insights and inspiring conversations. We’re already looking forward to building on this success and returning for the next edition in 2026.
