Today in Strasbourg, European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen gave her annual ‘State of the European Union’ speech, setting out EU priorities for the current legislative year. Read the full speech here.
Speaking to the European Parliament, the President stressed that Europe needs a focus on energy security, to take control of energy technology (with support from a Battery Booster Package), stronger grid infrastructure, and a solution to “bring prices down: clean homegrown energy.” SolarPower Europe has issued the following statement in reaction.
Dries Acke, Deputy CEO of SolarPower Europe (he/him) said:
“We agree with President von der Leyen: the EU must regain geopolitical clout. Europe’s fossil fuel dependency is undermining the continent’s strength. Good news: we know exactly how to tackle our dependency: with solar, battery storage, and rapid, flexible, electrification.
But we have one important remark: all fossil fuel imports, not just those from Russia, risk Europe’s prosperity and security. Homegrown renewable generation with a battery baseload is the fastest and most cost-effective pathway to meet Europe’s security, competitiveness, and climate needs. The renewable energy transition has become a geostrategic imperative for the EU.”
