Digitalisation

Digitalisation is revolutionising the energy sector, fundamentally altering how we operate today and shaping the future of energy systems. The European energy transition is inseparable from digital innovation, highlighting the need for policymakers to create strategies that support a highly flexible, solar-powered grid. Modern digital tools are already crucial to delivering a sustainable energy system, accelerating Europe’s shift to renewables and giving people more control and opportunities to manage, trade, and benefit financially from smart solar technologies.

With the growing interconnection of energy infrastructure and digital platforms, cybersecurity has become central to maintaining energy security. Protecting solar PV systems from evolving cyber threats is vital to safeguard assets, ensure grid reliability, and maintain uninterrupted power supply to consumers. As digitalisation progresses, it also paves the way for the smooth integration of different economic sectors, unlocking new avenues for solar businesses to innovate, expand their services, and discover fresh opportunities in a rapidly changing landscape.

The Digitalisation Workstream
The Digitalisation Workstream develops solutions that allow solar PV companies to utilise data to its full potential, both in their operations and their products. This includes necessary cybersecurity approaches. We provide a learning platform for energy companies to share best practices and contribute to policymaking.

We develop initiatives that help members leverage large datasets of ground-mounted solar PV installations to improve asset management and bring down operational costs. We exchange best practices to integrate AI into the working practices of energy companies, allowing our members to be more innovative and productive.

We closely follow ongoing legislative developments on cybersecurity, such as the NIS2 Directive, Cyber Resilience Act, etc. and develop cybersecurity recommendations to increase the security baseline and ensure Europe’s sovereignty over its electricity grid.

Lastly, we address data interoperability challenges for smart grids. We develop data harmonisation approaches for device-to-device communication in flexible buildings and solutions for communication with flexibility service providers and grid operators.
