We welcome the Affordable Energy Action Plan and the Clean Industrial Deal as timely and essential steps towards making energy more affordable for European consumers.
However, targeted improvements are still needed to fully unlock the potential for direct electrification and avoid market distortions that could hinder industrial decarbonisation and competitiveness, ultimately impacting consumers through higher prices.
Recommendations for the Affordable Energy Action Plan and Clean Industrial Deal
Direct electrification combined with clear targets and funding. Grid expansion and flexibility. Tax and tariff systems assessment.

Direct electrification combined with clear targets, funding, and legislative backing
- Higher levels of clean direct electrification will bolster Europe's energy security, reduce reliance on fossil fuels, and substantially reduce long-term energy costs.
Full implementation of electricity market legislation
- Electricity market legislation must be fully implemented to support long-term contracts, clean energy deployment, and investor confidence.
Grid expansion and flexibility
- The EU must invest in electricity grid infrastructure, optimise permitting and promote demand side flexibility.
Assessment of tax and tariff systems
- Electricity costs should be lowered by reducing excessive taxes and charges for electricity, and aligning incentives with climate goals while phasing out costly fossil fuel and related subsidies.
About the Electrification Alliance
E-Mobility Europe, the European Heat Pump Association (EHPA), Eurelectric, the European Electrical Contractors Association (EuropeOn), the International Copper Association Europe (ICA Europe), the Renewables Grid Initiative (RGI), Smart Energy Europe (smartEn), SolarPower Europe, Transport & Environment (T&E), and WindEurope, joined forces to launch the Electrification Alliance, calling for electricity to be recognised as the key energy carrier for an efficient and decarbonised European future.
