Europe is deploying solar photovoltaics at an unprecedented pace to meet its climate and energy security objectives.While significant attention has been placed on reducing installation costs and accelerating deployment, ensuring the long-term quality, reliability and sustainability of PV systems has become equally important.

Quality influences every stage of the PV value chain from manufacturing and project development to operation, repowering and end-of-life management. Poor quality decisions can lead to reduced energy yield, increased operational costs, lower investor confidence and unnecessary waste. Conversely, investing in quality delivers higher lifetime performance, lower risks, greater bankability and enables circular business models.

Recent research, including outcomes from the SUPERNOVA project and international initiatives such as IEA PVPS Task 13, demonstrates that quality should no longer be viewed as a technical issue alone. It is a strategic topic for policymakers, investors, asset owners and the wider renewable energy ecosystem. The key lays in aligning decisions between all involved stakeholders towards the largest quality benefit and to preserve data along the various stages in the life cycle of a PV project.
