Solar: Europe’s Path to Energy Independence

This month, we have been engaged in several strategic events and discussions, advocating for the pivotal role of renewables in Europe’s competitiveness and security. At the European Industry Summit in Antwerp, we championed solar and storage as essential to industrial success. Energy costs persist as a barrier for many sectors, but solutions are within reach. Solar power is now the most affordable electricity source in much of the world. When paired with storage, it offers reliable, predictable, and cost-effective energy for both industry and households - a promise fossil fuel imports cannot match.
To unlock these benefits, Europe must modernise its energy infrastructure. SolarPower Europe, alongside our members, is actively advocating for more energy system flexibility through our #LetsFlex campaign and a series of events with our national associations. Demand response, advanced storage solutions, and flexible markets ensure low-cost solar power reaches those who need it, when they need it. Our efforts extend to urging policymakers to simplify access to long-term Power Purchase Agreements (PPAs), which enable energy-intensive industries to secure affordable renewable energy. We are also pushing for increased investment in reshoring solar manufacturing to Europe and strengthening international partnerships, recognising solar as a strategic sector for both economic and energy security.
Energy policy was also front and centre at the Munich Security Conference, where European leaders underscored that today’s energy choices will shape Europe’s prosperity and security for generations. The European Commission’s message was clear: electrification and renewables are the future. On the ground, I highlighted how solar power paired with batteries can meet demand without new dependencies or delays.
Last year, solar and wind generation exceeded fossil fuels for the first time in Europe, marking a significant step toward energy independence. The consensus after intensive debate at the Munich Energy Hub is undeniable: renewables and electrification are the most economical and swift path forward. Home-grown renewable electricity is vital for Europe’s sovereignty, and resilience.
Wrapping up the month, our annual EU Solar CEO Forum in Brussels brought together leading solar and storage CEOs and EU policymakers to discuss the importance of homegrown electricity for Europe’s security and competitiveness. We addressed the urgent need to scale up flexibility in the energy system and reinforced solar’s critical role, particularly amid renewed energy weaponisation. Looking forward, we remain committed to shaping Europe’s climate framework and supporting the growth of the solar and storage sectors.
As February concludes, I thank our members and supporters for their continued commitment. Our organisation is dedicated to advancing the renewable transition, enhancing energy flexibility, and ensuring that solar and storage drive Europe’s industrial and energy strategy. Together, we are building a more secure, competitive, and sustainable future for all.
