Europe hosts one of the world’s largest and most mature solar PV fleets, and solar’s role in the continent’s energy mix is set to keep growing. As deployment accelerates across diverse markets, ensuring quality throughout the full lifecycle is essential to safeguard performance, investment value, and long-term sustainability.
Lifecycle quality assurance for solar power plants spans Engineering, Procurement and Construction (EPC); Operation and Maintenance (O&M); asset management; and End-of-Life management. In 2026, these stages increasingly apply not only to solar PV generation assets, but to more complex, integrated energy systems. New plants are frequently designed as hybrid projects, combining solar PV with battery energy storage systems (BESS), advanced monitoring, grid-support functionalities, and digital optimisation tools to maximise usable capacity and improve revenue stability.
As the European market scales rapidly, quality must keep pace: faster deployment cannot come at the expense of robust engineering, safe installation, reliable component selection, or long-term operational excellence. EPC and O&M remain central to technical availability, yield, and plant longevity, while asset management professionalises the commercial, contractual, and financial performance of solar investments. End-of-Life management is becoming increasingly relevant as early European installations approach repowering or decommissioning decisions, requiring responsible reuse, recycling, and circularity planning. Strong quality assurance across all lifecycle stages helps reduce LCOE and PPA prices, protect investor confidence, and ensure solar delivers dependable, sustainable energy for Europe.
As of 2026, the Workstream, comprising nearly 200 experts from almost 100 companies, has delivered a growing range of outputs, including Best Practices Guidelines, checklists, and technical resources. These tools enhance transparency among industry players and support consistent quality standards throughout project lifecycles.
The portfolio of best practices has widened over time, covering a broad set of topics across EPC, O&M, lifecycle quality, and asset owner guidance, and now includes new Technical Due Diligence Best Practice Guidelines to strengthen risk assessment and decision-making for investors and lenders. Reflecting the increasing complexity of solar assets, the Workstream is also placing greater emphasis on battery energy storage systems (BESS) quality, recognising their growing role in optimising performance, revenues, and grid integration.
Looking ahead, the Workstream remains committed to advancing quality through regular updates to its guidelines in line with evolving technical and safety standards, and by supporting stronger implementation across the industry, including the development of a third-party verification scheme to help raise and harmonise quality levels across the European solar market.
