The Skills Taskforce
The solar PV is a strategic pillar to meet the EU’s 2030 renewables target, and delivering it demands large‑scale upskilling and mobility. The sector is projected to deliver approximately one million jobs by 2030.
Solar workers underpin every part of the sector, from manufacturing through deployment to O&M, to sustain growth, the skilled workforce must expand at the same pace. Skills are not only essential for the sector’s growth but also for maintaining quality, safety, competitiveness, and the overall reputation of solar PV.
The aim of the Taskforce is to research and analyse the key shortages, as well as market trends. The solar PV workforce has more than doubled in under five years, and this rapid expansion has brought challenges, as labour supply is far less flexible than market demand.
To address these challenges, SolarPower Europe co‑coordinates the Renewable Energy Skills Partnership and actively contributes to several EU‑level initiatives, including the European Parliament’s Intergroup on the Future of Education and Skills and the European Alliance for Apprenticeships.
We are also involved in two EU‑funded projects whose activities kicked off in 2025: the European Solar Academy, which aims to upskill 100,000 solar workers, and RESkill4NetZero, which works to align skills needs across the renewable energy sector and strengthen the talent pipeline through shared practices.
