Solar and storage boost Europe’s energy security

For Europe’s security, it is essential that we drive forward the shift to clean, affordable, home-grown energy. Solar energy, together with flexibility and storage, provides long-term stability, making Europe more competitive and resilient.
The good news is, the solutions already exist and the shift is already in progress. The latest Electricity Review from Ember, shows that for the first time on record, solar and wind have overtaken fossil fuels in EU electricity generation. This is no small feat.
Just this week, SolarPower Europe and the Battery Storage Europe Platform launched the EU Battery Storage Market Review 2025, revealing a 12th consecutive year of annual battery storage market growth. In 2025, the EU installed 27.1 GWh, bringing the total capacity to 77 GWh – a tenfold increase from 2021.
If we want to meet Europe’s flexibility needs, we must keep this momentum going. The EU needs 10X Battery Storage by 2030 – and this is exactly what we have been calling for through the Battery Storage Europe Platform.
We have also been making this clear in numerous high-level meetings since the start of the new year, including discussions with DG GROW Director General Kerstin Jorna, the Cabinet of Commissioner Wopke Hoekstra, members of Commissioner Dan Jørgensen's Cabinet, DG CLIMA Director General Kurt Vandenberghe and his team, and, last but not least, European Council President António Costa.
2026 will be a pivotal year for SolarPower Europe and the Battery Storage Europe Platform to shape grid reform, market design, electrification and manufacturing resilience - ensuring solar, flexibility and storage remain at the heart of Europe’s energy security, affordability and competitiveness agenda.
This year we will continue to strongly advocate for a robust and growing European solar PV sector – upstream and downstream – to deliver for Europe’s citizens, businesses, and society at large.
