Joint letter on making the gas package fit for purpose

The Gas Package is a unique opportunity to ensure a level playing field for these new renewable players and accelerate the green hydrogen transition. SolarPower Europe and WindEurope are calling for a gas package that is fit for purpose, through:

• A clear definition of ‘low-carbon’ hydrogen
• A level playing-field that secures market access for renewables and electrification
• An independent planning system for the emerging renewable hydrogen market

The letter advocates that the upcoming hydrogen market, regulated through the proposed ‘gas package,' needs to be considered as a distinct market with new rules and new actors.

We urge the Council to keep sub-targets binding and for renewables only in the Renewable Energy Directive, as this will provide the necessary market signal for this market to ramp up.
