Time to make energy taxation a driver of the energy transition

Joint Letter

15 February 2024

The Electrification Alliance urges the European Institutions to find an agreement on the Energy Taxation Directive (ETD), and align national fiscal rules with the climate agenda.

Most Member States still impose lower taxes and levies on fossil fuels than on electricity, and some even tax consumers twice when reinjecting electricity into the grid. As long as this is occurring, achieving the energy transition will be challenging.

We urge the European Institutions to reconsider these aspects, ahead of the informal meeting of Economic and Financial Affairs Ministers from the 22-24 February 2024.
