Driving Europe's Clean Energy Future: The Renewable Hydrogen & Electrification Workstream Strategy Day 2025

27 May 2025

On 27 May, SolarPower Europe hosted its highly anticipated Renewable Hydrogen & Electrification Strategy Day at our offices in Brussels, bringing together leading policymakers, industry experts, and members of the workstream for a full day of collaboration, knowledge-sharing, and strategic planning.

This in-person event served as a pivotal moment to align on collective priorities and strengthen efforts for both electrification and renewable hydrogen across Europe. The day opened with the first session centred around the Electrification Action Plan and featured high-level insights from Tom Howes from DG ENER at the European Commission, MEP Radan Kanev, and Vice-Chair of the Workstream Manuel Alonso Fernández from Enel. Together they presented the urgent need for a robust Plan, outlining barriers to deployment and identifying actionable policy levers.

The second session of the morning sought to discuss how to tackle the existing barriers to electrification. Key voices from the industry such as Paul Münnich from Agora Energiewende, Małgosia Rybak from CEPI and Nicolai Romanowski from CEFIC offered valuable perspectives on issues including grid access, permitting challenges, ESG demands, and renewable energy procurement. This included three different types of electrification: baseload, flexible, and hybrid.

In the final session, moderated by Chair of the Workstream Christian Pho Duc from Smartenergy, participants assessed the current state of Europe’s hydrogen strategy.

The Renewable Hydrogen and Electrification Strategy Day was facilitated by Anaïs Faucher, Policy Advisor and coordinator of the Workstream. We would like to extend our sincere appreciation to all the speakers and participants whose valuable contributions have enriched our discussions in this important dialogue, and we look forward to continuing the great work.
